Desert Hunt 2010

"Back To The Future"

April 2nd 9AM PST - Online Draft "Click Here to Join The Draft"

"Boston is an oasis in the desert, a place where the larger proportion of people are loving, rational and happy."

-Julia Ward Howe, famed 19th century Boston activist

"Don’t worry about bringing your A-game; just bring 'A' game!"

-Hunt Captain Joe Dunphy, Boston (Medford, MA) native as told to Dave Mullen

"If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. It's the hard that makes it great."

-Tom Hanks, two-time Academy Award winner and Oakland's Skyline High School graduate

"I am not playing with three guys that can't break 100!"

-Captain Jim Ireland, Oakland native as easily overheard by foursome mate Dave Mullen

While past quotes from the 2010 Desert Hunt captains may not go down in the annals of literary greatness (or as examples of great compassion), the underlying confidence, intensity and bravado will no doubt set a new standard as Joe Dunphy and Jim Ireland vie for the prestigious champion's double-lined, triple-ply camelhair coat to be donned in the stifling heat of Palm Desert, CA this May.

This is the second time Dunphy and Ireland have captained teams in the Desert Hunt. In 1999, Ireland lost to the team headed by Clayton Oswald in a match that contained a much smaller field (eight) than today's typical field of 24 contestants. Dunphy lost in 2000 to Bill "Buzzsaw" Levey by just a saw tooth; a sharply played, seesaw battle that was decided by one point. The 13th annual Desert Hunt is the first time two previous captains will head up squads.

Captain Dunphy, sequestered to his underground club making factory in Scottsdale, AZ much like Dr. Brown developing the Flux Capacitor in "Back to the Future," is busy developing a team strategy and an extensive vitamin-taking plan that will gain him a 2010 victory.

Captain Ireland, being unable to find a loophole in the tournament bylaws that would allow him to play the tournament alone, has been sharpening his game with high level tournament play, while keeping tabs on the status of the games of other players that he must reluctantly draft.

The 2010 Desert Hunt tournament will be played the two courses of the Indian Wells Golf Resort, home of the initial Desert Hunt. The challenging par 72 Players Course comes in at 6,931 yards or "yaads" depending on your team captain, and the newer par 72 Celebrity Course measures 6,632 yards. The courses are in Golfweek's top 20 "Courses You Can Play" in California.

It's "Chowder" versus "Cioppino." "Codders" versus "Coffee." "Beantown" versus "Benicia." Expect the competition to be full of colorful banter. And expect the sparks to fly.
